Unique Surgery for a Ukrainian Defender
In Kyiv, at the Medical Center of the National Guard of Ukraine, a remarkable combined reconstructive surgery was performed for a serviceman who suffered severe blast injuries to the face in April 2024.
This surgery was made possible through a tripartite agreement between the Medical Center of the National Guard, the charity fund “Doctors for Heroes”, and the company LLC “IMATECH MEDICAL”.
The surgical team was led by scholars from the O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University: Professor Yuriy Chepurnyi and Professor Oksana Petrenko. The anesthetic part of the operation was managed by a team under the leadership of Professor Vsevolod Steblyuk.
The specialists successfully reconstructed the zygomatic bone using a custom implant made of biocompatible PEEK material.
The next step involved the installation of an individual scleral implant, preparing for a future ocular prosthesis. This preserved the function of the eyeball as a supporting structure and ensured the mobility of the future prosthesis.
“IMATECH MEDICAL” produced a patient-specific implant and participated in the surgery planning and technical support following implantation.
Key support was provided by the “Doctors for Heroes” fund, which assists injured guardsmen throughout all stages of treatment and rehabilitation, engaging leading specialists from healthcare institutions of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
The patient is currently feeling well, under medical supervision, and preparing for further treatment stages.
