Celebration of Bread in Ukraine: Traditions and Concert
The highlight of the celebration will be a concert by the famous band KOZAK SYSTEM on the main stage of the museum.
On Sunday, July 13, the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine invites residents and visitors of Kyiv to the Celebration of Ukrainian Bread, a large-scale event dedicated to farming traditions, the culture of labor on the land, and family values.
This year’s celebration aims not only to recreate ancient customs but also to immerse guests in the living tradition of the Ukrainian village, showing how bread is born from the hard work of human hands and love for the homeland.
“This celebration is about the essentials: the land, the grain, the sweat and patience of the farmer, and the warmth of the home hearth. We want every visitor not only to see but also to feel: bread is not just a daily routine; it is a valuable treasure,” say the organizers.
You will have the opportunity to experience the entire process of a farmer's life — from the harvest to the fresh bread on the table: witness the reenactment of the rituals of “zazhynky” and “obzhynky”; gather wheat, thresh sheaves, and grind grain in hand mills; taste warm, fragrant bread; and learn together with children where daily bread comes from.
The program includes:
- 2:00 PM — a ceremonial procession from the square to the bread field.
- 2:15 PM — the ritual of “zazhynky” by the vocal group “Yablunevyi Tsvit”.
- 2:30 PM — the ritual of “zazhynky” by the folklore theater “Dobrodei”.
- 3:00 PM — the ritual of “obzhynky” by the groups “Promin” and “Promin Plus”.
- 3:15 PM — greetings from the hosts marking the end of the harvest and a master class in folk dance.
- 3:30 PM — procession to the miller.
- 2:00 PM–4:30 PM — baking fragrant bread in a real oven with the participation of the Ukrainian workshops family @openfire.ovens and the bread school @palyanytsyabread.
- 10:00 AM–5:00 PM — an exhibition “World of Farming Traditions” (exhibit “Poltava and Slobozhanshchyna”).
For those interested in learning more about Ukrainian agricultural traditions, an engaging lecture will be organized. For example, about bakeries with Easter cakes on the coat of arms, the cost of a loaf, and vanished flour dishes, why women are predominantly shown harvesting in paintings, how many days a serf spent harvesting an acre of wheat, and why the sickle was the main tool until the 20th century. This lecture requires separate registration.
The highlight of the festival will be the concert of KOZAK SYSTEM at 5:00 PM on the museum’s main stage. These artists need no introduction. Their songs are an explosion of energy, freedom, and the Ukrainian spirit. Their music awakens, inspires, and energizes!
