Modern Activity Space Opens in Kyiv
Yesterday, July 5, a new location for physical activities was inaugurated at Contract Square in Kyiv.
This initiative is part of the international project «Cities for Healthy Living», which Kyiv joined in 2021 along with the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine and the company «Novo Nordisk». This was announced by Valentyn Mondriivskyi, the deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration, during the opening ceremony.
«Transforming Contract Square into a vibrant active space is an opportunity to create a massive area that inspires and engages the community. We are employing tactical urbanism methods here — temporary solutions that require no complex alterations to the infrastructure,» said Mondriivskyi.
The project is designed to last for one and a half years, after which its elements can be easily dismantled or relocated to another area.
The «Cities for Healthy Living» program aims to promote a healthy lifestyle, particularly in preventing diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity.
In 2024, the initiative expanded beyond the medical field to include urbanism, creating safe, comfortable, and modern spaces that encourage physical activity.
This project has entered the Ukrainian Book of Records as the largest temporary urban space for physical activities, covering a total area of 6321 square meters.
The project has an international character. Key partners include the Embassy of Denmark in Ukraine, the city of Copenhagen, the NGO «Ukraine Active», and companies «Carlsberg» and «JYSK».
Present at the opening were city officials, the Deputy Ambassador of Denmark to Ukraine Lars Olaf Soundal Petersen, renowned urban architect Mikael Colville-Andersen, CEO of «Novo Nordisk Ukraine» Vladyslav Moroz, and project partners.
Plans are underway to involve business representatives from other countries in this initiative. The new space at Contract Square was implemented with the sponsorship of «Novo Nordisk Ukraine», which allocated 6 million UAH for its establishment.
This newly created venue is intended to be another step towards making the city more suitable for active and healthy living, and it is already open to everyone interested.
