According to analytics company Appfigures, ChatGPT surged to the top of the global downloads chart in March, surpassing Instagram and TikTok, which have traditionally held top positions.
Appfigures (via TechCrunch) reports that ChatGPT’s downloads increased by 28% compared to February, reaching 46 million new installations. This marks the highest monthly record for ChatGPT to date.
Enhanced features, including improved image generation that allows users to create memes and illustrations in the style of Studio Ghibli, have contributed to its popularity. Additionally, OpenAI has updated ChatGPT's voice feature and lifted some content moderation restrictions. The app's popularity has also been bolstered by its association with artificial intelligence, much like Google was synonymous with search in the 2000s.
In March, social apps Facebook and WhatsApp also made it to the top five downloads, while others like Temu, CapCut, Telegram, Snapchat, and Threads entered the top ten.
Overall, the top 10 apps were downloaded 339 million times in March, outpacing February's total of 299 million.
