Ukrainian Documentary Film Achieves International Recognition

The film by Ukrainian director Myroslav Chernov, titled "2000 Meters to Andriivka", has garnered an award at the CPH:DOX documentary film festival in Denmark.

It won in the F:ACT AWARD category, as reported on the festival's website.

"We award the F:ACT prize to the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka" not only because it addresses a conflict at our doorstep, but also because it is a masterpiece of cinematic art: a haunting, multilayered depiction of war that can be compared to classics like "All Quiet on the Western Front".

However, this is not about World War I; it’s about today. The absurdity of war and its unsettling poetry are vividly present. An artist amidst the bloodshed brings reality home and creates an anti-war film that compels us to reflect on the irreplaceability of each lost human life," – the jury noted.

The film documents the events of September 2023 when soldiers of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade fought to liberate the village of Andriivka, near Bakhmut. The filmmakers captured every step of the operation.

Chernov worked on the project with the FRONTLINE team and Associated Press for nearly 1.5 years. The team included photographer Oleksandr Babenko, producers Michelle Mizner and Rainy Aronson-Rat.

The music for the film was composed by two-time Grammy Award winner Sam Slater ("Chernobyl," "Joker").

"This is a difficult time for Ukraine. It is a challenging time for Ukrainian filmmakers. But right now, we are fighting for the truth, for survival, and to ensure our stories are not forgotten. This recognition is further proof that we are heard and seen.

…We do not know what tomorrow holds for us, but we know that as long as our voices are heard, we will be alive," – wrote Myroslav Chernov after receiving the award.

A total of 71 films were presented at the festival across 6 different categories. The main DOX:AWARD prize was awarded to the film Always by Deming Chen, chronicling a farming family.

It is worth noting that in late January, the independent American film festival Sundance showcased footage from the film "2000 Meters to Andriivka".

In 2024, the documentary film "20 Days in Mariupol" by Myroslav Chernov, Yevhen Malolietka, and Vasylysa Stepanenko received several awards, including an Oscar, BAFTA, and the audience award at the Sundance festival.
