Gennadiy Gorbenko, a distinguished Ukrainian athlete, has died at the age of 50.
This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Athletics Federation.
The causes of death have not been disclosed.
Gorbenko's career was filled with victories. He made history by becoming the first world junior champion in athletics from independent Ukraine.
The 1994 Junior World Championships took place in Lisbon. Gennadiy excelled in the 400-meter hurdles, achieving a time of 50.56 seconds, finishing 0.29 seconds ahead of Hungarian Miklós Róth.
In this discipline, Gorbenko became a multiple champion of Ukraine. He also participated in the 2000 Olympic Games, where he set a personal record of 48.40 seconds in the semifinals and finished eighth in the finals.
The athlete also represented Ukraine at the 2003 Universiade, where he won a gold medal.
