Jay D. Vance Critiques Russia's Terms in Peace Talks
U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance described Russia's demands in the negotiations for resolving the war in Ukraine as "excessive".

Direct quote: "We anticipated that Russia would ask for too much, as their perception of the war is that they are winning. Ukrainians, understandably, seek a ceasefire given the difficulties of recent months. Our stance is clear: we do not want Ukraine to fail. We certainly want Ukraine to remain a sovereign state, but Russia cannot expect to gain territories it has yet to capture. This was part of their initial peace proposal.
Details: Vance also noted that it is a positive sign that both Russia and Ukraine are engaged in talks and offering "specific peace plans". However, he remarked that the U.S. will withdraw if it realizes that "the Russians are not engaging sincerely in the negotiations".
"If that happens – yes, we will withdraw. The President will say: we are exiting this process", Vance stated.
"This would mean that Russia and Ukraine would have to resolve the matter on their own – without U.S. advice or mediation. I do not think this is beneficial for any of us – not for the U.S., not for Russia, and not for Ukraine", he emphasized.
Vance added that he believes there are "some diplomatic breakthroughs" in addressing the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
Direct quote: "We must strive to bring these parties closer together to achieve lasting peace. We are not there yet. We will work on this until we determine that no further progress can be made. At that point, we will withdraw".
