Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU “will not yield the expected benefits”.
Orban claims that Hungary's membership in the EU was beneficial for other member states.
“It was a mutually beneficial agreement. However, Ukraine's accession could lead to losses. Ukraine will not add value but rather become a burden,” he emphasized.
According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, it is a “mistake” to use European funds to support Ukraine instead of stimulating the EU economy, which is facing challenges.
The European Commission seeks to persuade Hungary on Ukraine's accession
The European Commission hopes that Hungary will reconsider its objections to starting negotiations with Ukraine regarding EU accession, particularly concerning the first cluster “Fundamentals.”
This first cluster addresses fundamental principles that must be adhered to by any country wishing to join the EU, including the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, and freedom of the press.
The leader of the Hungarian opposition party “Tisa”, Peter Madyar, conducted a large-scale public opinion survey, showing significant support for Ukraine's EU accession among surveyed Hungarians.
