NRC Halts Humanitarian Aid: A Critical Update
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has announced a temporary halt to humanitarian assistance in nearly 20 countries, including Ukraine.
Reasons Behind NRC's Aid Suspension
“For the first time in our history, we are forced to stop urgent humanitarian operations that hundreds of thousands of people rely on,” NRC officials stated.
The primary reason for this decision is the reduction in funding from the United States.
In Ukraine, NRC has ceased emergency assistance to 57,000 individuals in frontline regions.
“This is happening during the winter months when people are left without heating and essential goods, including food,” the Council noted.
The funding cuts have also compelled the organization to lay off humanitarian workers globally.
USAID Cuts: Key Information
The administration of President Donald Trump is reducing the USAID workforce to a few hundred employees, placing workers on paid leave worldwide according to internal documents.
Exceptions include employees performing critical functions, managers, and staff involved in specifically designated programs.
The administration has reached out to USAID missions worldwide to identify which programs will continue, particularly those that “advance U.S. national interests.”
USAID has been ordered to immediately suspend all projects in Ukraine following a directive from the State Department to freeze foreign aid for 90 days. The agency funded projects across 29 different sectors in 158 countries globally.
