Drone Attacks: New Threats to Romanian Airspace
On the morning of November 25, during a massive attack on Ukraine, Russian drones entered the airspace of Romania and Moldova. This was reported by the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Air Force and confirmed by the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
In addition to UAVs, Russia also used various types of missiles to strike Ukrainian cities.
"Several Russian drones were detected in the Odesa region near the border with Moldova, with a possible border crossing," the Air Force noted at 07:44.
Six minutes later, the military also reported that at least one Russian drone likely crossed the border into Romania.
In the morning, the Romanian Ministry of Defense announced that military radars had detected an aerial target (a Russian UAV) approaching the country's airspace near Tulcea County. To monitor the situation, two German Eurofighter Typhoon fighters were scrambled from the "Mihail Kogălniceanu" airbase at 06:28.
The drone entered Romanian airspace from the direction of Vilkovo (Ukraine) towards Kilia Veche, Tulcea County.
At 06:55, a Ro-Alert message was issued in the Tulcea County area. At 07:11, the Eurofighter Typhoon reported a radar contact with a target over Ukrainian territory, outside of Romanian airspace.
Later, at 07:37, two F-16 fighters took off to respond to the situation, and at 07:48, a Ro-Alert was also declared for Galați County.
By 07:50, radars detected a second intrusion into Romanian airspace in the Galați County area, and an F-16 aircraft had a radar contact with it.
It is currently unknown whether the fighters or air defense systems shot down Russian drones over Romanian territory.
Russian drones have repeatedly violated the airspace of Romania and Moldova during strikes on Ukraine. For instance, on November 18-19, German and Romanian fighters were scrambled to intercept Russian drones that entered Romanian territory.
