Current Challenges in Sumy Region: New Threats from Russia
The situation in the border areas of Sumy remains complicated.
The Russian military continues to exert pressure, utilizing small assault groups.
This was reported by Andriy Demchenko, spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service, during a telethon.
Situation in Sumy: Russian assaults with small groups
Particularly tense conditions are noted in the communities of Yunakivka and Khotyn.
“The enemy does not relent, continuing its actions by deploying infantry groups to engage in combat, attacking the positions of our defenders on the territory of our state,” Demchenko stated.
The adversary is most active in the areas of Basivka and Zhuravka.
“However, recently the enemy has expanded this territory to the west with small assault groups, particularly towards the settlements of Veselivka and Volodymyrivka,” he added.
According to him, the Russians are not using armored vehicles in this sector.
Hostile small assault groups are attempting to penetrate deep into Ukrainian territory using ATVs or motorcycles, waiting for reinforcements to attack Ukrainian positions.
These actions are preceded by numerous air, artillery, and drone strikes.
The border of Sumy has become one of the main focuses of Russian attacks, - said Syrskiy.
Recently, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskiy, discussed the front-line situation as of the end of May.
He noted that the Russian army has intensified its activities in the Zaporizhzhia direction, while the border of Sumy has become one of the critical points for enemy assaults.
In the Kursk region, the Russians have deployed their best units.
These units, according to Syrskiy, were intended to be used in the east.
“Our defense forces are inflicting significant losses on the enemy and protecting our northern borders,” the commander-in-chief emphasized.
At the same time, in this area, the enemy has an advantage in using fiber-optic drones, which complicates the fight against them.
According to the General Staff, on May 31, there were 35 clashes in the Kursk direction.
The Russian army conducted 14 air strikes, dropping 34 guided bombs.
The enemy carried out over two hundred shellings, including from multiple rocket launchers.
Due to the escalation of the situation in Sumy, authorities have announced mandatory evacuation for 11 more settlements in the Rychkivka, Bilopillia, Voroziansk, and Mykolaiv communities, where 2800 people reside.
