U.S. Officials Visit Paris: Exploring New Paths for Ukraine

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with special envoy Donald Trump, Steve Witkoff, is planning a visit to Paris to discuss the war in Ukraine and various other matters of mutual interest, reports Politico.

The U.S. is exploring with France potential avenues for ending the conflict in Ukraine.

Rubio is expected to meet with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, while Witkoff, a former real estate investor without diplomatic experience, will engage with President Emmanuel Macron.

The discussions will focus on possible ways to halt Russia's military actions in Ukraine, as well as other important issues such as Iran and U.S. tariffs.

Macron, leading European efforts to provide security assurances to Ukraine post-conflict, plays a crucial role in these discussions.

The dialogue between Macron and Witkoff came shortly after the ambassador met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a possible ceasefire in Ukraine, as U.S.-Russian negotiations have stalled in recent weeks.

According to the White House press secretary, the meeting in Moscow was termed "another step in the ceasefire negotiation process," despite Trump's "frustration."

Following this meeting, one of the deadliest Russian attacks on Ukraine occurred. On Palm Sunday, April 13, Russia launched a missile strike on Sumy, resulting in at least 35 fatalities and 119 injuries.

Ironically, commenting on his meeting with Putin in a television interview on Fox News, Witkoff stated that the discussions offered potential for "reformatting" Russian-American relations and that Vladimir Putin is open to an agreement for "lasting peace" with Ukraine.
