Germany has halted the process of admitting new refugees under the UN resettlement program, reports Handelsblatt.
Suspension of New Refugee Settlements
The German Ministry of the Interior and the UNHCR have confirmed that no new commitments regarding refugee admissions will be made due to ongoing coalition negotiations.
According to dpa, only cases that are already in the final stages of the process will be excluded from this suspension.
Previously, the CDU/CSU and SPD parties decided to limit voluntary federal refugee admission programs and not to initiate new ones.
Germany has committed to providing a total of 13,100 places for refugees in 2024 and 2025.
As per UNHCR, 5,061 individuals have arrived in the country under this program so far.
UNHCR proposes candidates for resettlement who are in particular need of protection.
German officials conduct interviews and security checks on-site.
Additionally, there are other humanitarian programs in Germany for refugee admissions.
Germany Loses Leadership in EU Asylum Applications
France has now taken the lead in the number of asylum applications in the EU. In the first quarter of 2025, the number of asylum applications in Germany dropped by 41% compared to the same period last year.
