False Notification for Ukrainians in the USA
This week, some Ukrainians in the USA under a humanitarian program received inaccurate emails regarding the cancellation of their status.
According to Reuters, these emails claimed that their statuses had been revoked and that they had seven days to leave the country, or else "federal authorities will find you".
"If you do not leave the United States immediately, you will be subject to potential law enforcement action leading to your removal. DHS is terminating your humanitarian status. Do not attempt to remain in the United States", the message stated.
However, on Friday, April 4, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that the email was sent in error and that the humanitarian program for Ukrainians established after the Russian invasion in 2022 had not been terminated. It is currently unknown how many Ukrainians received this email.
On the same day, the Department of Homeland Security sent a follow-up email clarifying that the previous order was incorrect and that "the terms of your humanitarian status remain unchanged at this time".
It should be noted that in January, following Donald Trump's inauguration as president, officials from the Department of Homeland Security ordered the suspension of several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the United States, including a key initiative for Ukrainians.
