Funding for Documenting Abducted Children

The U.S. has announced short-term funding for an initiative aimed at documenting abducted children from Ukraine to ensure data is passed to the relevant authorities.

Details: A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department confirmed that funding will be provided temporarily to ensure the proper transfer of critical data regarding the children: "This is part of the standard procedure for closing programs that are no longer operational."

Earlier this month, Democratic lawmakers urged the Trump administration to reinstate the program.

The U.S.-funded initiative, led by Yale University's Humanitarian Research Lab, has helped track thousands of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.

Reminder:

• The closure of the program raised concerns about potential loss of access to vast amounts of information, including satellite imagery, regarding nearly 30,000 children taken from Ukraine.
• The decision to terminate the program came after Trump ordered a comprehensive review to prevent what he termed a waste of taxpayer dollars on initiatives not aligned with American interests.
• Ukraine reported that over 19,500 children have been taken to Russia or occupied territories without the consent of their families or guardians during the war.
