Combatting Violence: New Initiatives in Ukrainian Universities

Today, the Boris Grinchenko Kyiv University hosted an event as part of the international campaign «16 Days Against Violence». The aim of the event was to raise awareness about violence and its consequences.

According to reports from the university, students, faculty, representatives from NGOs, law enforcement, and experts attended the event. The session was moderated by Alla Shlapak, a city council member.

«Our university is committed to addressing issues of violence. We operate a crisis center and provide psychological services for students and faculty, and we are always ready to respond to such challenges,» stated Acting Rector Oleksandr Turuntsev.

The NGO «Women’s Political Action Alliance» presented an installation symbolizing the desire to break the silence and foster an open dialogue about violence issues, particularly domestic and gender-based violence.

During the event, the priority for Ukraine's implementation of the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention to prevent violence against women was discussed. Participants emphasized the need not only to respond to dangerous incidents but also to work proactively on prevention. Kyiv is also focusing on providing support and rehabilitation for victims.

University students will also participate in a survey to assess their awareness and attitudes towards violence.
