Creating a Safe Educational Environment During Wartime
Establishing a secure educational environment is vital for Kyiv amid the war. This was emphasized by the Deputy Head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Valentyn Mondryivskyi, on his Facebook page.
He mentioned that in 2024, 1,300,277 thousand UAH is allocated for the construction and reconstruction of educational institutions in the capital. For repairs to kindergartens and schools, 1,986,961 thousand UAH has been set aside.
«The majority of these funds will be directed towards equipping shelters, a quarter for roof repairs, and the rest for window replacements, facade insulation, modernization of engineering systems, and ensuring accessibility. Kyiv has over a thousand municipal educational institutions, which makes these amounts appear substantial. However, all these measures aim to create a safe educational environment,» said Valentyn Mondryivskyi.
He provided the example that in the Darnytsia district, repairs to shelters have been completed in 64 educational institutions, and the construction of three new anti-radiation shelters is ongoing. Energy-saving measures (capital repairs of facades and roofs) are being implemented in 21 institutions. Additionally, two kindergartens that were non-operational and required full restoration are undergoing major renovations.
In the Holosiivskyi district, the construction of four anti-radiation shelters and the reconstruction of a school with an attached shelter is ongoing. In 29 educational institutions, shelters are being repaired, in 28, energy efficiency measures are being implemented, and in 18, major repairs of engineering systems are underway.
In three schools in the Dnipro district, dual-purpose buildings with anti-radiation properties are being constructed. Repairs to shelters are taking place in 52 educational institutions, while energy efficiency measures are being implemented in 55.
Valentyn Mondryivskyi emphasized that most of the new shelters are dual-purpose structures – they provide protection for both students and civilians.
He specifically noted that Kyiv, as the largest city in Ukraine, has accommodated the highest number of internally displaced persons during the full-scale invasion. Therefore, comparing Kyiv with other cities in the context of tenders for the construction and reconstruction of educational institutions is inappropriate.
