WhatsApp is updating its platform with an added layer of security, designed to assist journalists and public figures who may be targets of cyberattacks.
The new feature, termed "Strict Account Settings," activates enhanced privacy and security settings in addition to end-to-end encryption. It includes the following options:
Account Security: Two-step verification is enabled. Security notifications are activated and locked. End-to-end encrypted backups are recommended for users who opt for backups.
Messaging and Media: Attachments and media files from unknown senders will be blocked. Link previews are disabled.
Calls: Calls from unknown numbers will be hidden. Your IP address will also be concealed during calls.
Profile and Online Status: Your last seen time and online status, profile photo, and status message are hidden from other users, except for your contacts or a pre-defined list.
Groups: Only known contacts or a pre-defined list of individuals can add you to groups.
These new security enhancements in WhatsApp can be activated within the app on iOS, Android, and Mac, and each can be toggled individually in the "Privacy" settings section.
