Revamping the Labor Code: New Opportunities for Workers
The new draft of the Labor Code of Ukraine introduces innovative employment formats such as remote work, home-based employment, and flexible hours. Deputy Minister of Economy and Agriculture, Daria Marchak, noted that annual paid leave will increase to 28 days, aligning with European standards.
The number of types of employment contracts will rise from six to nine. Remote work will be classified as a distinct type of employment contract, allowing employees and employers to agree on working conditions.
The code also establishes priorities for certain social groups, such as pregnant women and parents of young children. Employees facing harassment can be temporarily transferred to remote work as a protective measure.
The code aims to abolish outdated regulations that restrict night work for women with children. For instance, a midwife with a young child would not be able to assist mothers during night hours.
The new Labor Code also strengthens vacation guarantees. In accordance with European norms, employees will be entitled to 28 days of paid leave per year.
After the law is passed, employers will not need to renegotiate contracts, but they will have a year to formalize employment relationships in written form.
The draft of the new Labor Code was approved by the government on January 7, 2026, and awaits ratification by the Verkhovna Rada.
