New Capabilities of Russian Drones with MANPADS
The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has revealed new details about an upgraded version of the Russian drone «Geran-2», now equipped with a man-portable air defense system.
This information was disclosed by GUR on social media.
In the «Military Technology» section of the War&Sanctions portal, an interactive diagram and components of the «Geran-2» drone series «E» equipped with the air defense system have been presented.
In response to the successful actions of the Ukrainian Air Forces, the enemy is adapting its drones to target aerial threats.
Earlier reports mentioned the use of the «Geran-2» with the Soviet missile R-60, but today we learned about the new configuration featuring the MANPADS «Verba».
This modification allows for manual control of the drone by the operator in real-time. A Chinese optical camera Honpho TS130C-01 and a mesh modem Xingkay Tech XK-F358 (China) are used for this purpose.
Upon detecting an aerial target, the operator sequentially activates two servos: the first initiates a chemical battery and cools the guidance head of the MANPADS, while the second opens a protective cover after cooling to the necessary temperature. The missile is automatically launched after the target is acquired.
A significant difference in this version is the presence of a full-fledged warhead on the drone itself.
The sample examined by GUR is equipped with a thermobaric warhead TBBCH-50M.
Thus, after the missile launch, the drone retains its capability to fulfill its primary strike mission, with targeting also being possible by the operator.
The set of blocks and components is standard for such drones: flight controller, inertial navigation system, communication modems, etc.
For the first time, the inertial navigation system features a new 6-axis inertial module SCH1633-D0I produced by Murata (Japan), which was presented as a solution for autonomous driving in civilian vehicles.
The origin of the remaining electronic component base includes the USA, China, Switzerland, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, and Great Britain. A complete list of components with markings and photographs is available on the War&Sanctions portal.
The disclosure of such data aims to expose the technological chains of Russian military aggression and strengthen international sanctions, emphasized GUR.
