New Book Reveals Secrets of Ukrainian Military Intelligence
A new book titled “The GUR Island. Secrets. Operations. War” has been released, focusing on the most notable events in Ukrainian military intelligence.
According to the agency's press service, this documentary work by journalist and author Maksym Butchenko narrates the history of the Main Intelligence Directorate: the people, decisions, and operations that have influenced the course of the Russian-Ukrainian war since 2014 until now.
The publication chronicles the evolution of Ukrainian military intelligence: from its initial steps in the 1990s to contemporary multi-dimensional operations that have reshaped global perceptions of intelligence capabilities.
For the first time, details about the battles for Hostomel, the creation of the world’s first drone fleet, special operations of marine drones MAGURA, daring raids into the Belgorod region of Russia, precision strikes over 2,000 km away, and actions by Ukrainian intelligence officers against war criminals in temporarily occupied territories are revealed based on testimonies from spies and commanders.
The book also features insights from military intelligence leaders over the years, including Oleksandr Skipalskyi, Oleksandr Halaka, and Valerii Kondratiuk, discussing the development of GUR MO Ukraine from the time of independence to the full-scale war events.
“A country of free people, an army of brave warriors, a society that has fought for its dignity for centuries has proven too strong for the bloodthirsty army of the Kremlin’s Fuhrer. Ukrainian intelligence officers have always been at the forefront of the battle against the Russian enemy. The fights of our special forces and intelligence operatives on land, sea, and air, at the front lines and deep in enemy territory, in information and cyberspace — all of this is chronicled in this book,” wrote GUR MO Ukraine chief Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov in the preface.
