Day of Dignity and Freedom: Significance and Remembrance
In Ukraine, November 21 is observed as the Day of Dignity and Freedom, an important date in the nation's history.
This day was established by the Presidential decree on November 13, 2014, to honor two significant events in modern Ukrainian history - the Orange Revolution of 2004 and the Revolution of Dignity of 2013.
The Day of Dignity and Freedom replaced Freedom Day, which was celebrated from 2005 to 2011 on November 22. In 2011, the then-President Viktor Yanukovych abolished it, merging it with the Day of Unity.
On November 21, 2013, mass protests began at Independence Square in Kyiv in response to the government's decision to suspend the course toward Euro-integration. Initially, a few hundred people protested, but within days, over a hundred thousand supporters emerged.
Unlike the events of the Orange Revolution, this time the struggle for dignity and freedom cost many lives; more than a hundred people died, and thousands were injured. In 2014, armed aggression from Russia began, leading to the occupation of Crimea and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
This year, Ukraine marks the Day of Dignity and Freedom for the fourth time amid the full-scale invasion that has been ongoing since February 24, 2022. The country is once again fighting for its freedom and independence.
In Kyiv and other cities, a series of events will take place under the slogan “November 21… and every day, without weekends.” The program includes exhibitions, forums, conferences, screenings of thematic films, and theatrical events.
In the capital, a joint interfaith prayer for Ukraine and its freedom fighters, the laying of flowers at the Alley of Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, and the “Bell of Remembrance” action are planned. There will also be a consecration of the monument “Angels in White Coats.”

In the General Staff of the Armed Forces, it was noted that the Revolution of Dignity exemplified nobility, courage, and self-sacrifice, forever changing Ukraine's history.
“On November 21, 2025, we will celebrate the 21st anniversary of the Orange Revolution, the first Maidan in the history of independent Ukraine, which significantly influenced the formation of national consciousness,” the statement reads.
It is emphasized that on the Day of Dignity and Freedom, the Armed Forces of Ukraine honor the dignity and freedom of the Ukrainian people and all heroes who have risen against Moscow's darkness and Russian imperialism.
“The Armed Forces of Ukraine, defending independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, uphold the ideals of freedom and democracy, and pay tribute to the patriotism and courage of citizens who have defended democratic values,” stated the General Staff.
They highlighted that participants of the Revolution of Dignity played a crucial role in building the renewed Armed Forces of Ukraine, many of whom went directly to the front from Maidan.
“A low bow to those warriors who demonstrate to the world that they can defend the state during operations against the full-scale invasion of Russia,” emphasized the General Staff.
