New Developments in Satellite Communication Across Europe
On Friday, Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile announced their plan to establish a European satellite network aimed at facilitating communication between satellites and smartphones for both commercial and governmental purposes. This was reported by Reuters.
The operational center of this satellite network will be based in Germany, with potential sites near Munich or Hanover under consideration, the companies stated. The initiative will be managed by a joint venture between the two firms.
Satellite service providers are eager to offer mobile connectivity as demand for broadband internet in underserved areas increases.
According to Paris-based consulting firm Novaspace, the satellite communication market could surpass $10 billion by 2033.
The German center will provide connectivity for mobile network operators across Europe, supporting broadband services, population safety, and disaster response, Vodafone and AST said.
The satellite group will feature a "command switch" for oversight and security, including communication encryption and satellite monitoring over Europe, they added.
Commercial operations of the satellite group are planned for 2026.
Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle stated in a press release that this "sovereign satellite solution" will give operators in Europe access to secure satellite communication that complements terrestrial networks.
