SpaceX Disables Starlink Devices in Myanmar Amid Fraud Concerns

SpaceX has turned off more than 2500 Starlink devices in Myanmar that were linked to fraudulent networks and cyberattacks, as reported by CNN.
The United States has expressed concerns for over a year regarding the use of Starlink by criminal networks in Myanmar for internet access and fraudulent activities. SpaceX stated that it monitors violations in all markets where Starlink operates.
“In rare instances when we detect violations, we take appropriate actions, including collaboration with law enforcement agencies worldwide,” said Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX's VP of Starlink business operations.
Dreyer added that SpaceX independently identified and “blocked over 2500 Starlink sets near suspected fraud hubs.”
While Dreyer did not specify the exact date of the shutdown, the announcement came after Myanmar's military junta stated that this week it discovered 30 sets of “receivers and accessories” from Starlink during a raid on one of the fraud complexes.
According to a recent report by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, there are around 30 large complexes along the border between Myanmar and Thailand specifically built for fraud generating billions of dollars annually, with Americans among the victims.
Workers at these fraud centers are often lured in with promises of well-paid jobs or fall victim to human trafficking. They are regularly held against their will and forced to partake in online fraud schemes in heavily guarded facilities where beatings and torture are common, as reported by CNN.
