Innovations in Naval Warfare: New UAVs by the SBU
The Security Service of Ukraine has introduced the latest unmanned naval drones called «Sea Baby». These platforms have successfully undergone testing during missions in the Black Sea, including the third strike on the Crimean Bridge that occurred on June 3, 2025.
«Our new drones have significantly altered the balance of power in the Black Sea and proven their effectiveness. The upgraded «Sea Baby» are even more powerful. The process of clearing the Black Sea of the Russian fleet will continue, and the enemy will feel the strength of our technologies», – stated SBU Head Lieutenant General Vasyl Maliuk.
According to Brigadier General Ivan Lukashov of the SBU, during this year's attack on the Crimean Bridge, «sea babies» delivered explosives to the target, destroying the supports of this illegal structure.
The new modifications of «Sea Baby» were funded by contributions from Ukrainians through the UNITED24 platform.
One of the leaders of military counterintelligence at the SBU reported that the updated drones can cover distances over 1500 km, carry up to 2000 kg of cargo, and feature enhanced engines and modern navigation systems.
The SBU development team showcased two drones with different weaponry. The first is equipped with a gyro-stabilized machine gun installation with target acquisition and recognition systems. The second carries heavy armaments: a 10-tube Grad multiple launch rocket system.
«The SBU is the mastermind behind a new type of naval warfare. We are constantly seeking effective means to maintain Ukraine's advantage in the Black Sea. President Volodymyr Zelensky's task is to neutralize the powerful Russian Black Sea Fleet. We are actively working on this», – emphasized Ivan Lukashov.
The Security Service is also continuously developing other examples of modern weaponry that are already being successfully used in the Black Sea. However, detailed information about these assets remains undisclosed.
It is worth noting that Ukraine's active use of unmanned platforms has forced Russia to reposition most of its military vessels to the Novorossiysk bay, allowing for the unblocking of the «grain corridor».
