Major Outages Affect Popular Applications
On the morning of October 20, numerous major applications and websites suddenly malfunctioned. According to Independent, issues were reported with applications like Snapchat, Roblox, Fortnite, Duolingo, and Canva.
The problems began around 10 AM Kyiv time or midnight Pacific time.
These outages are likely linked to a disruption in Amazon Web Services (AWS), which provides infrastructure for a significant portion of the modern Internet.
The company has acknowledged an ‘increase in errors’ and delays affecting ‘multiple AWS services’.
Amazon Web Services offers a wide range of internet infrastructure services, allowing businesses to rent computers and servers for their applications and websites.
Thus, any issues with AWS can rapidly impact a large portion of the Internet, causing outages in websites that may not have any obvious connection to Amazon.
Currently, AWS is the leading provider of such ‘cloud’ services worldwide.
Last year, the company generated $108 billion, which constitutes a major part of Amazon's profits.
Amazon Web Services has stated they are still investigating the root cause of the issues.
“Engineers have been immediately engaged and are actively working to resolve the issue and fully understand its underlying cause,” the latest update from the company reads.
