The Future of e-Hryvnia: Prospects for Digital Currency in Ukraine
The development of the e-hryvnia is ongoing, yet its implementation by 2027 remains uncertain.
According to Forbes Ukraine, Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, Oleksiy Shaban, pointed out that launching the digital hryvnia will require substantial financial resources, and spending them during wartime could be deemed unethical.
The regulator plans to conduct a pilot project to test the digital currency not only within the NBU but also under real conditions for payments and transfers. However, the cost of this pilot is high, and the technical requirements are complex.
"We are making progress, but I cannot say that 2027 will be the year for the e-hryvnia's rollout," noted Oleksiy Shaban.
It's worth mentioning that the regulator presented the concept of the e-hryvnia as digital money in November 2022. The primary aim of the electronic hryvnia is to efficiently perform all monetary functions, complementing both cash and cashless forms of the hryvnia. The use of e-hryvnia should be convenient for all segments of the population, including legal entities and government bodies.
In October 2022, the State Enterprise "Ukrainian Institute of Intellectual Property" registered the trademark "e-hryvnia" and e-hryvnia, owned by the NBU.
