Celebrating Ukraine's Defenders: New Traditions and Changes
On October 1, Ukrainians celebrate a day dedicated to the defenders of Ukraine, coinciding with the feast of the Protection of the Holy Virgin.
Defenders Day became a state holiday in 2014, but in 2023 it was moved to October 1 due to changes in the church calendar.
The Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Greek Catholic Church now celebrate holidays 13 days earlier, making the Protection feast observed on October 1.
The need for such a national holiday became apparent after the Russian aggression, as Ukrainian soldiers deserve recognition.
On this day, a moment of silence will be held, along with a communal prayer for fallen heroes.
The Protection feast symbolizes defense and guardianship.
Mary has always been the patroness of the Cossacks, who on this holiday would elect a hetman and define the future of the Cossacks. The traditions of the Cossacks are alive in the modern army, showing the continuity of generations.
Many churches have been built in Ukraine in honor of the Protection, one of the oldest being the Protection Church in Sutkivtsi, built in 1467.

The Minister of Defense emphasized the importance of defenders, who serve as role models for youth, and wished them strength in their pursuit of peace.
He also remembered those in captivity and thanked the families of military personnel for their support.

The head of the SBU, Vasyl Maliuk, also congratulated the defenders, highlighting that Ukrainians have the strength to resist.
He noted that modern defenders continue the tradition of victories, striking back at the enemy.
