Surge in Gas Reserves in Ukraine: New Milestones
As of September 14, gas reserves in Ukraine's underground gas storage facilities (UGS) have for the first time this year exceeded last year's levels, reaching 12.055 billion cubic meters.
This was reported by the specialized publication ExPro.
On September 14, 2025, there were 12.055 billion cubic meters of natural gas stored in Ukrainian UGS, compared to 12.05 billion cubic meters on September 14, 2024, which is 0.05% or almost 5 million cubic meters less.
It is expected that the gap will widen in the coming days.
The publication reminded that at the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), there were nearly 5.41 billion cubic meters of natural gas stored in Ukrainian UGS, which is 35% or 2.95 billion cubic meters less than on April 17, 2024. Throughout the injection season, Ukraine managed to completely close this gap, primarily due to increased imports.
Since the beginning of the injection season, nearly 6.68 billion cubic meters of gas have been injected into Ukrainian UGS, which is 1.67 times more than in 2024. Additionally, more gas has been injected into storage during 2025 than was stored in UGS at the end of the heating season.
In particular, in September 2025, Ukraine is injecting an average of 53.9 million cubic meters of natural gas into storage daily, which is 2.3 times more than in September 2024. About half of the injection volumes consist of imported resources.
The average daily import volume is 23.6 million cubic meters in September, almost all provided by the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine.
It is worth noting: The filling of European underground gas storage facilities reached 80% (86 billion cubic meters of natural gas) on September 13-14. This is the lowest storage filling rate in the EU since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, but this year's reserves are higher than in 2021.
