Mykolaiv's Fresh Water Supply System Underway
In the coming two weeks, Mykolaiv will implement a new water supply system that will use fresh water instead of saltwater.
This announcement was made by the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Yuliya Svyrydenko.
"The new system has already been initiated, and fresh water will soon completely replace saltwater in the city’s supply. The water pipeline will provide 120,000 cubic meters of water daily for households and an additional 50,000 for agricultural irrigation," the Prime Minister stated.
She emphasized that for the first time since 2022, residents of Mykolaiv will have fresh water flowing from their taps.
According to her, all pipes and pumping systems are located underground. Currently, shelters for workers are being constructed. Additionally, remote control panels, backup power sources, and air attack protection systems have been installed.
The Recovery Agency has clarified that over 90% of the project has already been completed. The entire pipeline, approximately 136 km in two lines of 67.9 km each, has been installed. Pumping stations are 88% ready. Subsequently, landscaping and restoration of access roads will be conducted.
It is worth noting that in 2022, Russian forces destroyed a key water pipeline that supplied Mykolaiv. In 2024, 8.7 billion UAH was allocated from the state budget for the construction of a new water intake system from the Southern Bug River. The total cost of the project amounted to 6.5 billion UAH, with the savings intended for the construction of water pipelines in other regions. Construction work began in January 2025, and test operations of the water supply system commenced in August.
