Fake Claims about Ukrainian Military Losses
Russian propaganda outlets claim that hackers from Russia have breached the database of the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff, allegedly obtaining information about «1.7 million dead and missing Ukrainian soldiers» since the onset of the war.
This information was reported on Telegram by the Center for Counteracting Disinformation under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine.
«Kremlin-controlled media are disseminating false statements that Russian hackers have hacked the General Staff's database and supposedly found that «1.7 million Ukrainian soldiers are dead or missing» — this is utterly absurd, as Ukraine has never had an army of that size in its years of independence,» the statement reads.
It is emphasized that as of January 2025, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the number of the Ukrainian army was 880,000. The President also stated that Russian military losses on the front are three times higher than those of Ukraine. The Center for Counteracting Disinformation reminded that according to General Staff data, as of August 20, Russians have lost 1,072,700 killed and wounded since February 24, 2022, which undermines the fabricated figures of Russian propagandists regarding Ukrainian losses.
"The aim of this fake is to demoralize Ukrainians, convince the world of the «exhaustion and ineffectiveness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces» and weaken its international support," the Center emphasized.
