Current Status of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant: New Challenges

As of now, estimates indicate that Russian forces lack the technological capabilities to resume operations at the occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

This was stated by Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk during a press conference regarding government initiatives.

"According to assessments from IAEA experts and our own evaluations, we do not see any technological possibilities for connecting (the Zaporizhzhia NPP to the Russian energy system). The plant continues to generate no electricity and is relying on the Ukrainian energy system for power," Hrynchuk said.

She also noted that the fires reported in August occurred outside the occupied station. However, while the facility is under Russian control, there remains a significant threat to nuclear safety.

Hrynchuk emphasized that after the de-occupation of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, a substantial amount of expert work will be needed to assess the condition of the facility. Only after that can solutions be developed to restore its operations.
