Utilizing Artificial Intelligence to Combat Corruption in Albania
Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has suggested that the nation could leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to improve its fight against corruption, enhance transparency, and even manage entire government departments, as reported by Politico.
During a press conference in July, he proposed the idea of a ministry in Albania that could operate entirely under AI management, devoid of nepotism and conflicts of interest. Rama also indicated that local developers could create an AI model 'chosen' by the minister, potentially leading to a government and prime minister formed entirely by artificial intelligence.
While no official steps have been taken in this direction yet, Rama urged a serious consideration of this possibility.
Former politician and writer Ben Blushi endorsed the idea, stating that AI governments are entirely plausible and could radically alter the perception of democracy. He argued that if government services can be effectively provided by AI, there is no point in choosing between human candidates. Blushi emphasized that AI does not make mistakes, does not require a salary, cannot be bribed, and operates continuously.
Albania has long struggled with pervasive corruption affecting all aspects of life, including politics. The ruling party has repeatedly been embroiled in corruption scandals, and many officials have faced accusations and convictions. Currently, opposition leader Sali Berisha is on trial for corruption charges, while former Prime Minister and President Ilir Meta is serving a prison sentence.
According to Rama, implementing AI in governance could become not only a technological breakthrough but also a significant step for Albania in its journey toward EU membership.
