WhatsApp's Struggles Against Restrictions in Russia

WhatsApp has announced that the Russian government is attempting to restrict the messenger's functionality by demanding access to encrypted messages. The company emphasizes that end-to-end encryption protects users' rights to private communication, which is provoking resistance from the Russian authorities.

Recently, Russia has started to limit calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, accusing the platforms of refusing to cooperate with law enforcement on issues related to fraud and terrorism.

WhatsApp stated that it will continue to work on maintaining access to encrypted communication for users worldwide, including in Russia. According to Reuters, Telegram responded by stating that its moderators use AI to remove millions of harmful messages daily and actively combat fraud and calls for violence.

Conflicts between Russia and foreign tech companies have been ongoing for several years, and following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the government intensified control over the internet space.
