OpenAI Partners with US Government for AI Access
OpenAI has entered into an agreement with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), allowing federal agencies to access ChatGPT Enterprise for just $1 per agency over the course of a year. This was reported by TechCrunch.
The offer took effect the day after GSA added OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to its list of approved AI vendors for civilian agencies. This enables government entities to utilize their tools through the MAS system, a platform that facilitates AI usage without the need for individual negotiations with each provider.
GSA Commissioner Josh Grunbaum has urged Google and Anthropic to follow OpenAI's lead and collaborate with the government. It is currently unclear whether those companies will offer similar terms.
In addition to basic access to ChatGPT Enterprise, OpenAI provides agencies with unlimited use of its advanced models for an additional 60 days and grants government employees access to a community of government users and educational resources.
Data security remains a key issue in the dialogue between AI providers and U.S. government entities. GSA requires assurances that confidential information will not be included in training datasets. OpenAI, for its part, assures that it will comply with all safety protocols for government users.
This offer from OpenAI follows the release of a new AI development strategy from the Trump administration, which includes the development of data centers and deeper AI integration into government processes.
