President Volodymyr Zelensky has enacted a new law that officially recognizes Ukrainians deported between 1944 and 1951 who were forcibly relocated from the Polish People's Republic.
This legislation establishes the status of deported individuals who were displaced to the USSR as part of a population exchange between the Ukrainian SSR and Poland. It also guarantees state support, social benefits, medical care, preservation of historical memory, and obliges the state to honor the memory of these tragic events.
Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized that the Ukrainian government will continue to systematically address the crimes of the totalitarian regime and ensure they are properly assessed and condemned.
“This is primarily about people. Unfortunately, many witnesses of those tragic events have already passed away. However, to protect the rights of those who are still with us, our state guarantees the assistance provided by law,” the minister highlighted.
