Alaska Airlines Halts Flights Due to IT System Failure

Alaska Airlines has announced a temporary halt to all flights due to a failure in their IT infrastructure. This marks the second major incident within a year.

According to reports from Reuters, the airline suspended operations on Sunday evening around 8 PM Pacific Time but did not specify the cause of the failure.

The company indicated that the effects of this incident could linger into the evening, although specific details remain undisclosed. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not provided any comments.

This is the second significant disruption for Alaska Airlines in the last year. In April 2024, flights were suspended due to an issue with the system responsible for calculating aircraft weight and balance.

Additionally, in June, Alaska's subsidiary, Hawaiian Airlines, reported a cyberattack that disrupted parts of their IT systems. This incident coincided with warnings from Google and Palo Alto Networks about a hacker group named 'Scattered Spider' showing interest in the aviation sector.

Alaska Air Group operates 238 Boeing aircraft and 87 Embraer planes. The company has not yet responded to inquiries regarding a potential link between the cyberattack and the recent failure.
