New Border Control Regulations in the EU

The European Council has approved new legislation that will enable the launch of a cutting-edge digital platform for managing entry and exit at borders (EES) within the next six months. This initiative aims to enhance the effectiveness of border control at the EU's external borders.

It is important to note that this system will also affect Ukrainian citizens.

The EES will automatically record entries and exits, passport data, fingerprints, and facial images of citizens from non-EU countries traveling for short stays within EU member states.

"Ensuring reliable protection of our borders is critically important for the European Union. The new entry-exit system will help guarantee that citizens from non-EU countries comply with our regulations. This will make our borders safer and the control process more efficient," said Kaare Dybvad Bek, the Minister for Immigration and Integration of Denmark, which currently holds the presidency of the European Council.

Thanks to this system, relevant authorities, from border guards to law enforcement agencies, will have access to data that will allow them to verify the identity of third-country nationals and information regarding their permitted stay in the Schengen area. As a result, EES will significantly reduce the risk of identity fraud and overstaying.
