New Mosaic in London Honoring Alla Horska
On July 14th, Trafalgar Square in London will host the unveiling of a new mosaic titled “Boryviter,” presented by boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk. This artwork honors the remarkable Ukrainian artist Alla Horska and marks the beginning of an international initiative to promote Ukrainian monumental art.
The original panel depicting a falcon in flight, symbolizing creative freedom, was created in Mariupol in 1967. Three years later, Alla Horska was murdered by Soviet secret police, and in 2022, the mosaic was damaged during the full-scale invasion by Russia.
The reproduction project was initiated by ROZETKA, the Oleksandr Usyk Foundation, UKRAINE WOW, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. Fifteen artists and researchers contributed to the mosaic, overseen by the artist's granddaughter Olena Zaretska and cultural manager Anastasia Ishchenko. Over 700 kg of materials from various countries were gathered for an accurate reproduction.
“Boryviter” is not just a mosaic; it represents a voice for a culture that is being targeted for destruction. Its presence in London is an act of remembrance, resistance, and faith in restoration,” the organizers stated.
As part of the initiative, a second copy of the mosaic was created and divided into 1250 fragments, all of which sold out within a day. The raised funds of over 4 million UAH will be directed towards the restoration of the Kyiv mosaic.
