Inclusive Train Car: New Opportunities for Passengers
The new inclusive train car will be available for booking, and in the absence of special requests, the compartments will operate under normal conditions.
Ukrzaliznytsia has completed the modernization of its first experimental passenger train car, fully adapted for transporting individuals in wheelchairs.
This car features a compartment design but accommodates not 4, but 6 sleeping berths. The layout is arranged so that two passengers in wheelchairs and two attendants can travel comfortably. If there is no demand for inclusive spaces during the journey, it can accommodate 6 passengers.
Key features of the car include:
- Electric lift with a capacity of up to 300 kg;
- Wider doors and corridors for easy movement;
- Navigation in Braille and contrasting signage;
- Spacious restroom with a shower, SOS button, crutch holder, changing table, and a child seat;
- Occupancy indicator for the restroom;
- Individual power outlets with USB and Type-C;
- Seats with adjustable backrest angles;
- Separate lighting controls in the compartment and at each seat;
- Video surveillance in designated areas of the car.
The car was manufactured at the train depot in Bakhmach. The entire process lasted three months and was executed by the company's specialists.
Prior to the modernization, the Ukrzaliznytsia team held several consultations with organizations specializing in assistance for people with disabilities. This allowed them to consider the actual needs of users and create a car that meets modern inclusivity standards.
This car is part of Ukrzaliznytsia's systemic work on implementing barrier-free solutions in railway transportation. The company is consistently working to ensure accessibility of both rolling stock and station infrastructure for persons with reduced mobility. Specific solutions are being introduced to improve access to platforms, navigation, support services, and online bookings.
Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that this car is just the first step in a larger program aimed at creating a barrier-free environment on the railway. The company plans to expand similar solutions to make travel comfortable and accessible for all passenger categories.
