Annalen Baerbock Elected President of the UN General Assembly
The former German Foreign Minister, Annalen Baerbock, has been elected as the president of the UN General Assembly for a one-year term.
This was announced by the current chair of the assembly, Philemon Yang, as reported by the German publication Spiegel.
Annalen Baerbock Leads the UN General Assembly
It is noted that during a secret ballot, Annalen Baerbock's candidacy was supported by 167 member states of the UN. She was the only candidate for this high position.
However, due to an initiative from one of the organization's participants, the voting process occurred in a secret format, rather than by acclamation, as is often the case with a single candidate.
According to diplomatic sources from Spiegel, the secret voting format was initiated by the Russian Federation, which openly opposed Baerbock's candidacy, accusing her of "biased attitudes".
As the head of the German Foreign Ministry, Annalen Baerbock has repeatedly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine. She has consistently called for a tough policy towards the Kremlin, which has repeatedly provoked a sharp negative reaction from the Russian government.
Annalen Baerbock's Candidacy for the UN General Assembly Presidency
Previously, Foreign Minister Annalen Baerbock planned to run for the position of the head of the UN General Assembly.
She noted that this decision follows the example of many of her predecessors, who were also former foreign ministers or prime ministers.
In January, Annalen Baerbock criticized the German government for its indecisiveness regarding aid to Ukraine.
Baerbock remarked that Germany is losing the opportunity to lead peace efforts in Europe, which concerns her. She believes that some politicians are focused on internal issues and upcoming elections rather than taking responsibility for peace and freedom in Europe.
