Art Train: Barbara Kruger’s New Project in Ukraine

From May 1 to July 14, a unique train painted by American artist Barbara Kruger will run in Ukraine. The project is titled "Untitled".

The artist has decorated the coaches of the Ukrainian Railways' "Intercity" trains. The first trip will take place from Kyiv-Passenger to the Darnița station, stopping in Lviv, Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Poltava, Vinnytsia, and Khmelnytskyi.

Barbara Kruger created this installation on behalf of the cultural organization RIBBON International in collaboration with Ukrainian Railways.

Project curator Maria Iserlis noted that Kruger drew inspiration from the agitation trains of Vasyl Yermilov from the 1920s, which carried revolutionary slogans and disseminated propaganda messages in rural Ukraine.

The texts on the train are written in Ukrainian, which was important for Kruger so that people could understand the messages.

"For her, the train symbolizes solidarity," says Iserlis.

Barbara Kruger is known for her bold, provocative texts that address modern issues, urging passersby to stop, think, and reassess the world around them.

In the commissioned project "Untitled (Another One)", the following lines are written:

"ANOTHER DAY ANOTHER NIGHT ANOTHER DARKNESS ANOTHER GLOW ANOTHER KISS ANOTHER FIGHT ANOTHER LOSS ANOTHER GAIN ANOTHER DESIRE ANOTHER SIN ANOTHER SMILE ANOTHER TEAR ANOTHER HOPE ANOTHER FEAR ANOTHER LOVE ANOTHER YEAR ANOTHER ARGUMENT ANOTHER LIFE"
