New Air Quality Monitoring Regulations in Ukraine

Ukraine has established a new protocol for informing its citizens about air quality. This document outlines the primary pollutants and their levels for assessing air quality.

The corresponding order (No. 590 dated March 24, 2025) has been registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, as reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

"This is an important step towards ensuring transparency and accessibility of information about air quality for the public in Ukraine," the agency noted.

The document sets forth:

• a list of pollutants used to determine the quality index;
• concentration ranges for these pollutants;
• color and text indicators for the index;
• recommendations for the public.

The air quality index for various pollutants can be classified as:

• "Very Poor";
• "Poor";
• "Unsatisfactory";
• "Satisfactory";
• "Acceptable";
• "Good".

"The concentration ranges for the quality index have been developed based on normative values for each pollutant, taking into account WHO recommendations."

This protocol has been developed in alignment with European air quality standards published by the European Environmental Agency," said the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

Recall that in February, Kyiv experienced a significant decline in air quality. Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.

Later, it was revealed that weather conditions, particularly the lack of precipitation and low wind speed, contributed to the accumulation of pollutants in the air.
