Ensuring Children's Safety Online: New Initiatives in Ukraine
According to recent studies, Ukrainian children begin using the Internet as early as five years old, spending at least an hour online each day. For teenagers, this figure is even higher: 79% spend over three hours online daily. The widespread presence of children in the digital space necessitates a focused approach to their safety.
To combat cyberbullying, fraud, and unwanted content, Ukraine has launched the "Safer Internet Center." This initiative is implemented by NGOs such as "Magnolia," "La Strada-Ukraine," and "Docudays."
The Center operates in three main areas:
StopCrime Hotline
This hotline accepts reports of online sexual violence against children, assists in blocking such materials, and cooperates with the international INHOPE network. The StopCrime project was established with the support of Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation, Diia.Education, and the Cyber Police Department to address online violence against children.
Support Line for Children and Youth 116111
This national hotline provides psychological and legal assistance to children who have become victims of online violence or faced other Internet threats.
Awareness Campaigns
The Center conducts informational campaigns for children, parents, educators, law enforcement, and anyone interested in learning more about digital hygiene.
Safer Internet Centers are a widely adopted practice in EU countries, supported by the Insafe network. The Ministry of Digital Transformation collaborates with European partners to create a secure online environment for children and to protect their rights on the Internet.
