New Anti-Tobacco Strategy in Kyiv
On November 21, the first meeting of the newly established Coordinating Council on public health took place in Kyiv. The council was created to implement measures aimed at enhancing the public health system in the capital.
During the meeting, the draft Strategy for reducing tobacco consumption and its adverse health effects in Kyiv from 2025 to 2030 was approved. This document is a joint effort of the Kyiv City Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Main Department of the State Consumer Service in Kyiv, and the Health Department of the Kyiv City State Administration. This was reported by Valentina Hynzburh, the director of the Health Department.
“Smoking poses a significant threat to the public health of Kyiv residents. According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, smoking is the leading cause of over 60% of all cardiovascular diseases and around 15% of lung cancer deaths in the country,” emphasized Hynzburh.
The main goal of the Strategy is to reduce smoking rates among adults and children by 30% by 2030 and to create a “smoke-free” environment in public spaces.
To implement the Strategy's provisions, it is planned to involve territorial state authorities, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, research organizations, and NGOs. This decision was made at the Coordinating Council meeting.
In addition to the Strategy's approval, the event also addressed the state of immunoprophylaxis in Kyiv and issues related to the diagnosis, prevention, and eradication of zoonotic diseases, including rabies.
