Modern Shelters for Schools in Kyiv: New Opportunities for Children
In Kyiv, the program for constructing modern shelters in schools is in full swing. This year alone, over 5 billion hryvnias have been allocated from the city budget for these works. This was reported by the deputy head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Valentyn Mondryiivskyi, during a field meeting in the Dniprovs'kyi district.
«We are building shelters in accordance with new construction standards, ensuring all necessary conditions for children and educators during wartime. This is part of Mayor Vitalii Klitschko's strategy for child safety — modern shelters are being constructed in all districts of the city to prepare schools for both current and future challenges,» Mondryiivskyi emphasized.
In the Dniprovs'kyi district, four protective structures with anti-radiation properties are being built. Over 600 million hryvnias have been allocated for their construction this year.
One of the shelters at Lyceum No. 183 «Fortuna» covers an area of over 3,200 m² and is designed for 1,300 people. Currently, nearly 70% of the work has been completed: the foundation is finished, the main structures have been erected, waterproofing and roofing are underway, and connections to engineering networks have begun. The construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
At Gymnasium No. 146, a shelter covering nearly 2,000 m² will accommodate 741 people. Over 60% of the work has been completed here: the foundation, columns, and outer walls have been built, waterproofing has been done, and ventilation installation and connections to utilities are ongoing.
The new shelters will be equipped with everything necessary: separate rooms for students of different ages and staff, restrooms, medical points, storage areas for food, and dining areas. Additionally, the facilities will have ventilation systems, fire suppression systems, backup power, and will be adapted for people with limited mobility.
Kyiv is also continuing to improve the technical condition of existing shelters and expand the network of shelters with new facilities.
