Car Arson Fueled by Unrequited Love
A vehicle destroyed by fire belonged to a 52-year-old man from Kyiv, who is the head of a department at a local university. The perpetrator had been trying to rekindle a relationship for several months but received a firm rejection. In a fit of rage, he doused the victim's car with a flammable liquid and set it ablaze, injuring his hand in the process. Law enforcement apprehended him and charged him, facing up to ten years in prison.
The Kyiv police received information about a car burning in the courtyard of a residential building on Radunska Street. A response team from the Desnyansky police department and emergency services arrived at the scene. The fire completely destroyed a Hyundai vehicle.
Police operatives and criminal analysts discovered that the arsonist was a 49-year-old resident of the Holosiivskyi district, who arrived at the crime scene with a pre-prepared canister of gasoline. He smashed the car's window, doused the interior with the flammable liquid, and ignited it, sustaining burns to his hand during the act.
The suspect was detained under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He stated that he intended to take revenge on the new partner of his former cohabitant, as he still had feelings for her.
Investigators, under the supervision of the Desnyansky District Prosecutor's Office, charged him under Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for intentional damage to another's property by arson. The perpetrator faces up to ten years in prison for his actions.
