Court Case Against Human Smuggling Organizer
A Kyiv entrepreneur and father of three attempted to illegally transport a local resident across the border by hiding him in the trunk of his car. He now faces up to nine years in prison.
Investigators from the Pechersk police department, in collaboration with the prosecutor's office, uncovered the illegal activities of a 37-year-old man who was trying to facilitate the illegal departure of conscripts to neighboring countries.
The perpetrator sought potential clients among his acquaintances, promising to help them cross the Ukrainian state border for a fee of $4,000. For instance, he offered to transport a conscript to the Romanian border, hiding him among luggage in the van, after which the client was supposed to cross the border on foot.
Law enforcement detained the offender while he was receiving part of the payment – $2,000, which he obtained from the client for the service.
The man has been charged under Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine for organizing the illegal transportation of persons across the state border for mercenary motives. The penalty for this article includes up to nine years of imprisonment with asset confiscation.
