65 Years of Kyiv Metro: A Legacy Amidst Conflict
Today, the Kyiv Metro marks its 65th anniversary since its launch. For the past few years, the subway has been an essential transport artery and a shelter, saving the lives of many city residents.
Metro employees have joined the defense of the country since the first days of the invasion: some continue their work underground, while others have taken up arms to protect the nation.
«Unfortunately, among our colleagues, there are those who did not return. 31 metro workers lost their lives defending our freedom and independence. They were exceptional professionals, dear friends, and loving parents, who worked tirelessly for the city and then stood up for its future», the press service reported.
The metro emphasized that the memory of the fallen colleagues is an integral part of its history, which continues to unfold even in difficult times.
The first stations, such as «Vokzalna», «Universitet», «Khreshchatyk», «Arsenalna», and «Dnipro», were built almost by hand. Today, they are part of the architectural heritage.
In the 1950s, most of the work was done without modern machinery, requiring a large workforce and resources. This was one of the largest infrastructure projects in the country at that time.
