Kyiv Surgeon Investigated for Anesthesia Mismanagement
Police in Kyiv have charged a plastic surgeon after a tragic incident where a 28-year-old woman suffered cardiac arrest due to improper anesthesia preparation. The investigation revealed that the doctor incorrectly assessed the composition of the anesthetic solution, leading to the woman's death.
According to investigators from the Podil Police Department, during a plastic surgery procedure in the summer of 2023 at a medical center in the capital, the doctor failed to fulfill his professional duties, violating medical protocols and instructions for drug use.
As a result of improper preparation of the anesthetic solution, the patient experienced cardiac arrest during a buttock implantation surgery. Despite resuscitation efforts, the 28-year-old woman could not be saved.
A forensic medical examination conducted as part of the investigation found that the anesthetic solution contained three times the allowable therapeutic dose of the drug, which ultimately caused the patient's death. Furthermore, the substance should not have been used by the doctor and was not documented in the medical records.
Investigators, under the guidance of the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office, have charged the 50-year-old man under Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – improper performance of medical duties due to negligent attitude, resulting in serious consequences for the patient.
The penalty under this article includes imprisonment for up to two years with disqualification from holding certain positions or engaging in specific activities for up to five years.
